Lokaal verwerkt — bestanden verlaten je apparaat nooit
EPUB-editor
Editor laden…
Edits that should not require a desktop install
A typo in a book you wrote. A footnote stylesheet that is unreadably small on e-ink. A title and author line after a pen-name change. A short EPUB you would rather start from an empty book than by hand-writing an OPF. A shared or work computer where Sigil is not yours to install. Those are chapter, CSS, and metadata jobs. They do not need a conversion pipeline.
They are the wrong jobs for this page when the file will not open at all, or when the package itself is broken. Run Fix My EPUB first. The editor assumes it can parse the OPF and the chapter you open. The open cap is 50 MB, stricter than the other tools, because a live editing model and an autosave copy both sit in the tab.
What an export writes back
Rich-text edits are written back as XHTML. The source view refuses a save that is not well-formed XML, so a stray unclosed tag is not packed. CSS is edited as text. Metadata fields are written as Dublin Core in the OPF. On export, the OPF, the NCX, and the nav are saved so the package stays consistent, cover metadata is normalized, and the mimetype entry is stored uncompressed. The download is application/epub+zip.
Other chapter files you did not change stay as they were. The editor does not recompress images and does not subset fonts. A draft of the whole package is written to IndexedDB in this browser so a refresh can restore it. That draft is not uploaded. Clearing site data, or moving to another browser, drops it.
What this editor is not
It is not Sigil. There is no plugin API, no EPUBCheck loop, and no project-wide report of every broken link. Find and replace works in the chapter you are editing. It is not a conversion tool: PDF, MOBI, and AZW3 are out of scope. Fixed-layout comics are a poor fit for the rich-text view, because their pages are positioned artwork rather than a flow of paragraphs.
DRM files cannot be opened. A 50 MB book is refused before it is parsed. Highlights from a reading app are not in the file, so there is nothing to preserve or destroy there.
Sigil and the Calibre editor
Sigil and Calibre's editor are the better instruments for a damaged chapter, a search that spans every HTML file, and EPUBCheck after each change. They are desktop applications, and Calibre's editor sits next to a converter that can rewrite more than you asked.
Use them for that work. Use this page for a bounded edit: one chapter, one stylesheet, the title, the cover. If the health of the package is the question, Fix My EPUB answers it without putting the book into an editor at all.
Veelgestelde vragen
Where does the draft go if I close the tab?
Into this browser's IndexedDB, as one record for the book you had open. It is not sent to a server. Clearing site data, or using another browser, removes it. Export the EPUB when the edit matters.
Can a bad edit corrupt the EPUB?
The source view will not save markup that is not well-formed XML. The rich-text view writes XHTML the editor produced. Neither path repairs a book whose container is already broken. Use Fix My EPUB for that.
I changed one sentence. Which files are rewritten?
The chapter you edited, plus the OPF, the NCX, and the nav, which are written on every export so the package stays consistent. Chapters you did not open stay as they were. The mimetype entry is stored uncompressed.
Why is the limit 50 MB when compress allows 120 MB?
The editor keeps the book and a live editing model in the tab, and it autosaves the package to IndexedDB. 50 MB is the cap checked before open. A larger file can still be compressed, split, or repaired with the other tools.
When is Sigil or Calibre the right tool instead?
When you need EPUBCheck, a replacement that spans every file, or a conversion to another format. Sigil and Calibre's editor are built for that. This page is the shorter path for a chapter, a stylesheet, or a metadata and cover update, without an install.
