When a browser is the reader you have
A work laptop where Thorium or Apple Books is not installed. A file you just merged or compressed and want to skim before it goes to a device. A Project Gutenberg EPUB on a phone, with no library import. This page is for those checks and for reading on a backlit screen.
It is not an e-ink panel. A Kindle or Kobo still does the thing this site's other tools prepare files for: a reflective screen, page-turn buttons, weeks of battery. Use the reader here to confirm the file flows. Put the file on the device when you want e-ink.
Opening a book does not edit it
The EPUB is unzipped in memory. The container and the OPF are read, and the current spine item is rendered as XHTML with the book's own CSS. Font size, typeface, line spacing, width, and the light, sepia, or night theme are a local overlay. They are not written back into the file. Nothing is recompressed, and no Kobo spans are inserted.
The table of contents comes from nav.xhtml, and from toc.ncx when that is what the book has. Search walks chapter text in the tab. Read-aloud uses the browser's speech engine. The audio is not stored in the EPUB. Position and preferences go to localStorage on this device, with progress kept for 30 books and the least recently used dropped first. The open cap is 200 MB.
Limits of a page that only reads
There is no account, so position does not follow you to another computer. Clearing site data clears it. Highlights are not written into the EPUB. Fixed-layout books, especially comics, may not keep the pixel-exact pages a dedicated renderer gives them. DRM files from a store or an Adobe library loan cannot be decrypted here.
Keyboard page turns and a progress bar are as far as the chrome goes. There are no device collections, no Send to Kindle inbox, and no e-ink waveform. Speech quality is whatever voice the browser ships. Once the page has loaded, reading continues if the network drops, because the book and the reader code are already in the tab.
The Calibre viewer and Thorium
Calibre's viewer and Thorium Reader are more faithful for fixed-layout books and for media overlays, and Calibre can open a book using library metadata the file itself does not contain. They require an install, and Calibre's viewer sits beside a converter.
This page only reads. It does not build a library and it does not modify the file, which is what you want when you are checking a compressed or merged EPUB on a machine without Calibre. If the book fails to open, Fix My EPUB is the diagnosis. A viewer that fails the same way usually means the package is actually broken, not that the browser is fussy.

Does reading a book change the EPUB?
No. The file is unpacked in memory and rendered. Nothing is written back, and nothing is uploaded. Font size, theme, and position are preferences in this browser, not edits to the book.
Where is my place stored?
In localStorage on this device, for up to 30 books. The least recently used position is dropped first. There is no account. Another computer, or a cleared browser, starts at the beginning.
Can I use this instead of a Kindle or Kobo?
You can read the same EPUB, on a backlit browser page. It does not drive an e-ink panel, and it will not receive a Send to Kindle delivery. Use it to read or to check a file. Put the file on the device when you want e-ink.
Why did a store-bought book fail to open?
A DRM-protected file cannot be decrypted by a browser reader. Adobe DRM library loans have the same limit. A DRM-free file that still fails is usually a broken package. Fix My EPUB reports which check failed.
How is this different from the Calibre viewer?
Calibre's viewer opens books from a Calibre library and handles some fixed-layout and media-overlay books more completely. This page only reads, keeps the last 30 positions locally, and leaves the file untouched. It is the check you can do where Calibre is not installed.
