Speech that stays on your device
Most online text-to-speech tools ask you to upload the ebook to a server, and most reading apps with good voices want an account and a subscription. This tool takes a third path: the EPUB is parsed in your browser, and the speech is produced by the speech engine your browser or operating system already ships with. There is no upload step, no queue, and no limit on how much you can listen to.
Voices marked as local in the voice picker are synthesized entirely on your device and work offline. Voices marked as cloud are provided through your browser by its maker (for example the Google voices in Chrome) — the text being spoken is processed by that voice service, but still never by this site, and your EPUB file itself never leaves your device in any case.
Getting the best listening experience
Voice quality depends on the voices installed, and browsers differ: Microsoft Edge ships the natural-sounding Natural voices and is the best free option for listening; Chrome offers Google's voices; Safari and iOS use the system voices Apple installs. Whatever the browser, the sentence being read is highlighted and the page follows along, so you can read along or look away and come back.
Use the speed control for skim-listening at 1.5× or 2×, or slow it to 0.75× for language study. The ±5-sentence buttons jump back when your mind wandered — the reading position is remembered per book, together with the reader's progress memory.
Where read-aloud earns its keep
Commutes and chores: finished books pile up faster once the phone can read them while you walk or cook. Tired eyes: end a long screen day with a book instead of another page of glow. Language learners: hearing a sentence while seeing it highlighted is the classic listen-and-read drill, in any book you already own. Proofreaders: the ear catches doubled words and clunky rhythm that the eye slides over.

Is this EPUB text-to-speech really free and unlimited?
Yes. There is no account, no trial and no per-minute cap. Speech is generated by your browser's own speech engine, so there is no server bill to pass on to you — listen to whole books if you like.
Is my EPUB uploaded anywhere?
No. The book is opened and parsed entirely in your browser. Open your browser's network panel while listening and you will see zero upload requests. If you pick a voice marked as cloud, the text being spoken is processed by your browser's own voice service — but your EPUB file never leaves your device.
How good do the voices sound?
It depends on your browser, and honest expectations serve you better than marketing: Microsoft Edge includes the natural-sounding Natural voices and is the best free option we know; Chrome includes Google's voices; Safari, iPhone and iPad use Apple's system voices. All of them are pleasant for casual listening; none match a human audiobook narrator.
Can I keep listening with the screen off or in the background?
On desktop, Chrome and Edge keep reading while you switch tabs or minimize the window. On iPhone and iPad, iOS pauses speech when the screen locks or the browser goes to the background — that is a platform limit that applies to every web-based reader, not just this one. Android browsers generally continue in the background.
Which languages can it read?
Any language your installed voices cover. The tool auto-selects a voice matching the book's own language metadata and lets you switch manually — so an English book reads with an English voice, a Japanese book with a Japanese voice, on the same device.
Does the sentence highlighting follow the audio?
Yes. The paragraph being read is tinted and the current word is highlighted where the browser reports word boundaries (Chrome and Edge do; elsewhere highlighting is per sentence). The page scrolls along automatically.
Can it read a DRM-protected EPUB?
No. DRM-encrypted books cannot be opened by any browser tool. For books you bought, use the retailer's own app, which usually includes its own read-aloud feature.
Does it work offline?
Reading and local voices work offline once the page is loaded. Cloud voices (marked in the picker) need an internet connection.
